Job Summary:

Audit Trainees support our Audit Managers and Partners across a varied portfolio of statutory audit and assurance engagements, gaining exposure to the full audit cycle — planning, fieldwork and completion — across owner-managed businesses, groups and regulated entities. Trainees will study towards the ACA (ICAEW) or ACCA qualification at Galloways, having either recently graduated or completed A Levels.

Duties & Responsibilities

Client Care

  • Drafting client correspondence under supervision, and maintaining data security and confidentiality at all times;
  • Demonstrating a compliance mindset, attention to detail, and a high level of integrity consistent with the ICAEW / ACCA Code of Ethics and the FRC’s Ethical Standard;
  • Keeping up to date with current legislation and standards and complying with the firm’s CPD requirements.

Audit Work

  • Assisting on all stages of the audit cycle, including planning, risk assessment, fieldwork and completion;
  • Performing substantive testing and tests of controls across key financial statement areas;
  • Attending stock counts and client site visits, documenting findings and following up exceptions;
  • Preparing audit working papers to firm and ISA (UK) standards, with clear evidence and cross-referencing;
  • Drafting statutory financial statements under FRS 102 / FRS 102 1A, including casting and cross-casting;
  • Raising audit queries with clients and escalating issues to Seniors and Managers on a timely basis.

Wider trainee duties

  • Supporting accounts preparation for companies under FRS 102 / FRS 102 1A;
  • Assisting the tax team with corporation tax computations and personal and partnership tax returns;
  • Performing control account, bank and payroll reconciliations, investigating and correcting errors;
  • Researching technical points on accounting, auditing and tax matters, and summarising findings for review.

Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the confidence to deal with clients on site and remotely;
  • Well organised, accurate under pressure, and able to manage competing audit deadlines and budgets;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the questioning, sceptical mindset expected in audit;
  • A team player, comfortable working at client premises as well as in the office;
  • Competent in Excel and ideally confident using online accounting software (e.g. Xero, QuickBooks, Sage);
  • Flexible, positive and willing to travel to client sites as required;
  • Minimum 2:1 degree, or A*–B / Distinction*–Merit at A Level in relevant subjects if applying without a degree.
