Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic financial leadership to SMEs and owner-managed businesses, providing commercial insights, and support the senior management/board on performance and growth.
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, management accounting, financial reporting (monthly, quarterly, annual) and analysis.
  • Ensure accurate financial statements, manage statutory reporting, and maintain compliance with accounting standards and regulations (e.g., VAT, HMRC).
  • Attend regular client meetings to review financial performance.
  • Develop strong trusted advisor relationships and regularly liaise with other departments including audit, tax, and payroll.
  • Identify financial risks and implement controls.
  • Coach and mentor in-house finance teams or outsourced finance functions.

Requirements

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
  • Proven experience operating as a strong leader in an outsourcing function in an accountancy practice environment.
  • Strong background working with UK SMEs in various industry sectors.
  • Commercially astute with the ability to drive financial strategy.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Proven experience managing and developing a team in a results driven environment.
  • Excellent presentation skills and able to clearly deliver results to senior members of staff.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience supporting growth, scale-ups, or turnaround situations.
  • Exposure to fundraising, M&A, or exit planning.
  • Sector experience across professional services, technology, manufacturing, or similar.
